The organizing committee of the FIFA World Cup has introduced a new reduced-price ticket category following persistent criticism over the high cost of tickets for the 2026 edition, which will be hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico.
In a statement, the International Federation of Association Football (FIFA) announced the release of so-called “supporter access” tickets, priced at 60 US dollars each. These tickets will be available for all 104 matches of the tournament, including the final.
FIFA explained that the initiative was launched “to support travelling fans and encourage them to follow their national teams throughout the competition.”
The statement added that the 60-dollar tickets will be reserved for supporters of qualified teams and will account for 10% of the ticket allocation assigned to each national federation.
For its part, the European Football Supporters Association, which had previously voiced its dissatisfaction with the “exorbitant prices” FIFA was planning to charge for World Cup 2026 tickets, considers the measures announced by the world football governing body to be insufficient.
In a statement, the association said: “While we welcome what appears to be FIFA’s acknowledgement of the harm its original plans would have caused, the adjustments do not go far enough.”
It added: “Based on the publicly announced quotas, this means that only a very small number of fans, for each match and each national team, will be fortunate enough to benefit from the 60-dollar tickets, while the vast majority will be forced to pay very high prices, far exceeding those of any previous tournament.”
Last week, the association indicated that following a team from its opening match through to the final “will cost a fan at least 6,900 dollars (around 6,000 euros),” which is “nearly five times the cost of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.”
When announcing the launch of the 60-dollar tickets on Tuesday, FIFA stressed that national federations must “ensure that these tickets are allocated to their most loyal supporters, those with a strong and close connection to their national teams.”
FIFA also noted that the announcement comes “amid exceptional global demand for tickets,” revealing that 20 million requests have already been submitted.
