Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney stated that his country will respect the arrest warrant issued by the International Criminal Court (ICC) in The Hague against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and will proceed with his arrest upon arrival in Canada.
Carney said: “If Netanyahu arrives in Canada, he will be arrested.”
Asked by Bloomberg whether Netanyahu would be arrested if he came to Canada, Carney replied “yes,” stressing: “We respect international law, and we will comply with all decisions of international courts, as my predecessor, Justin Trudeau, did.”
He added that “this position reflects Canadians’ core values in supporting international justice,” noting that Canada’s recent decision to affirm recognition of a Palestinian state at the United Nations was a direct response to “the actions of Netanyahu’s government aimed at ending any prospect of a Palestinian state, in contradiction with the UN Charter and Canada’s policy since 1947.”
The head of government affirmed that “this commitment is not inconsistent with his call for a ceasefire in Gaza and for implementing the two-state solution, but it is necessary to preserve Canada’s international credibility.”
It should be recalled that on 5 February 2021, the International Criminal Court recognized Palestine as a State Party to the Rome Statute, granting it jurisdiction over the Palestinian territories occupied in 1967, including Gaza and the West Bank.
