Denmark says it will summon the US ambassador over the appointment of a new Greenland special envoy and has warned Washington to respect its sovereignty.

This comes after US President Donald Trump appointed Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry as a special envoy to Greenland.

Posting on social media, Governor Landry thanked President Trump and said it would be an honor to serve in this position and make Greenland a part of the United States. 4dc445c132a31a5dc4c43f82f1967f89.gif

The conflict between Denmark and the US over Greenland has been growing.

Trump has repeatedly said the US needs the resource-rich island for security reasons and has refused to rule out the use of force to secure it.

DW Correspondent Teri Schultz reports on Denmark's foreign minister reacting to Trump's appointment of a special envoy to Greenland.
