The spokesperson for the U.S. Department of Defense, Kingsley Wilson, said that American forces are prepared to carry out any orders issued by President Donald Trump concerning Greenland whenever the situation requires.
Responding to a question from the Novosti news agency, Wilson stated: “The Department of Defense is ready to execute the orders of the commander in chief (regarding Greenland) at any time, if necessary.”The statement comes just days after Democratic Congressman Ted Lieu, on January 11, called on the military to “refuse to comply” with any potential order from Trump to attack Greenland.
Greenland is an autonomous territory within the Kingdom of Denmark.
However, President Trump has recently revived references to U.S. interests in the island, highlighting its “strategic importance to U.S. national security” and declining to rule out the use of military force to take control of it.
In response, Danish Defense Minister Troels Lund Poulsen announced on Wednesday that his country “will continue to strengthen its military presence on the island” and called for “reinforcing NATO forces in the Arctic.” Danish and Greenlandic authorities have also warned Washington against any attempt to seize the territory, stressing their expectation that its “territorial integrity” be respected.
According to media reports, European Union countries discussed possible responses in January should U.S. threats toward Greenland prove to be “real.”
By way of background, Greenland was a Danish colony until 1953. It remains an integral part of the Kingdom of Denmark, while enjoying broad self-government since 2009, including the authority to manage its internal affairs independently.
