Tunisia - tourist targeted scams

Free flower scam in Tunisia
Hammamet, Sousse

  • Version 1: a tout offers you flowers, seemingly for free, but if you accept it, a fee will be demanded.
  • Version 2: besides flowers, it could be an item offered for “free” by a stall owner.

Places to beware:

  • Hammamet: Yasmin Hammamet
  • Sousse: Medina of Sousse

What to do:

  • Decline.

Pickpockets in Tunisia
Monastir, Sousse, Tunis

  • They work in a gang – one onlooker, one blocks, pushes, distracts, or engages you, one grabs and the final hides the loot under a cover (e.g. jacket/newspaper) and escapes.

Places to beware:

  • Monastir: Monastir Marina
  • Sousse: Medina of Sousse, Ribat, Hannibal Park
  • Tunis: Medina of Tunis, Bab El Bhar, metro (five lines between Tunis and nearby suburbs)

Fake goods in Tunisia

Djerba, Hammamet, Mahdia, Tunis
Unbenannt.JPGyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy.JPG

How it works:
  • Counterfeits of popular items here include antiques, gemstones, carpets and cigarettes and are also sold at inflated prices.
Places to beware:
  • Djerba: Markt/Basar in Houmt Souk
  • Hammamet: Yasmin Hammamet, Costa Mall
  • Mahdia: Mahdia’s Old Town
  • Tunis: Medina of Tunis
What to do:
  • Learn how to separate the wheat from the chaff, or only visit licensed, reputable shops. If a price is too good to be true, it is.

Taxi scams in Tunisia

  • Version 1: taxis here have to use meters, but some refuse to do so and will charge you an inflated flat fare.
  • Version 2: if using the meter, a taxi can take a detour or longer route to inflate the fare.
  • Version 3: rigging the meter to jump too much or too fast.
  • Version 4: charging fake additional fees like bag fees.
  • Version 5: bringing you to places where he gets a commission instead.

Places to beware:

  • Hammamet
  • Sousse
  • Tunis: Tunis-Carthage International Airport

What to do:

  • Avoid: taxis at tourist spots (e.g. Medina of Sousse).
  • Photo: take a photo of the taxi number and driver’s license.
  • Overcharging: ensure meter is turned on or research a fair price to negotiate with – check online fare estimators, your hotel/hostel staff or taxi booking apps (e.g. Tunisia Taxi).
  • Longhauling: be very clear when communicating your destination. Check your phone’s GPS to see if you are headed in the correct direction, though detours may be taken to avoid jams.
  • Rigged meter red flags: tampered/missing meter seal, only fare is displayed, driver clicking a hidden switch, driving slowly at a high speed area to prevent meter from jumping wildly.

Bottom line...NEVER travel to any country where theft from luggage in airports is a common occurrence!!!!

"Never pack valuables in your checked-in luggage". It's one of the mantras of travel, but there are times when not everything valuable fits into your carry-ons. Then again, you take dozens of flights, your bag always arrives intact so you get complacent. Trusting. The stories of baggage theft must be overstated, right? But fly often enough and one day you're going to get hit.

Statistics relating to the incidence of baggage theft are hard to come by. Airlines aren't interested, it's the job of airports to maintain security in baggage handling operations so they say. Airlines don't have a clue how many bags are tampered with since thefts don't get reported to them.

However, sting operations conducted in baggage handling areas and anecdotal evidence from passengers put the finger on some off the worst airports, and some of the most astonishing reports come from the US. Not surprising perhaps, since the US alone accounts for nearly a third of all the 3.5 billion air passenger movements recorded in 2015.

Well bloody hell.....having read these two pages, even if I had ever wanted to return to Tunisia again, I would have a change of heart!!
I mean who are you safe with? Where are you safe? Even the law rip you off! Fruit and flowers aren't even safe 😂

The saddest part of all, is that all of these warnings are correct 👍

When you don’t know the language you are an obvious and easy target. Theives and scammers take advantage if you are not familiar with costs and the currency.
The number of scams in Tunisia is scary.
I hate it when people try to sell me something while I’m relaxing on the beach. It’s rude and uninvited. I never take any cash to the beach except a small amount to pay to use the washroom if required.

the neighbors were coming to have a look at me and they were whispering together.
Yes! I was the freakin village exhibit! The woman from the shop over the road even came over for coffee....she asked ratty mother if I helped with the cleaning, where I slept and did I have much money! I was that feckin angry, I told them I was gonna tape my bank card to my head next time the bitch came over and bitch in front of her in English 🤬

In the Tunis airport, some Tunisian guy approached me trying to sale me an expensive android phone for $200. It was selling over over $1,000 USD at that time. I knew that he had lifted it from some unsuspecting tourist walking through the airport! I’ve never seen so much theft, scamming, and cheating in my life as in Tunisia. It was everywhere....North to South, East to West. The tourist areas especially Sidi Bou Said, Djerba, Hammamet, Tunis, and Kaorouin are HUGE targets of criminals. Watch out for holding the falcons, henna tattoos, renting rides on camels, horses, and the pirate ships, taxis, restaurants, and especially the discos! You will get scammed probably, even with a Tunisian boyfriend by your side....just not as much if you are with a Tunisian! You really NEED street smarts everywhere in Tunisia!

Tunisia is a terrible place. Everybody wants something from you. You are nowhere safe. I remember staying at rat mummies house and the neighbors were coming to have a look at me and they were whispering together. That was very inviting 🤷‍♀️
I was checked out by the neighbors too! I had no idea about bezness in those days. Dummy me just thought the neighbors were interested in meeting f**kface’s serious girlfriend! Duh!!!!

Snatch thefts in Tunisia
Djerba, Hammamet, Kairouan, Mahdia, Monastir, Sousse, Tunis

  • Bike/moped: riding past with a pillion rider doing the snatch.
  • Street, medina, market, park, transportation hub: distracting and snatching from you, then escaping via a getaway car or down a street corner.
  • Metro/streetcar: snatching and getting out just before the doors close.

When I went to Tunisia, I took out insurance covering the following things: health, accident, kidnapping, and terrorism! I nearly had to use the terrorism as they had a major attack in Tunis one day after I had left! What a country!!!!!
